Benzodiazepine Addiction Rehab

Often referred to as benzos, Benzodiazepines are one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the UK. They’re used to help people deal with anxiety, panic disorders, muscle spasms and seizures, and when prescribed for short periods, can be highly effective.

However, due to how they affect your brain’s central nervous system, they also carry a significant risk of dependence and addiction, especially if they’re used for longer than they’re supposed to be.

Some of the most common forms of benzodiazepines include:

Although benzodiazepines are legal prescription medicines in the UK, using them recklessly, for example:

  • Without medical guidance
  • Taking higher doses than prescribed
  • Combining them with alcohol or other drugs

can significantly increase the risk of health complications or addiction.

Understanding Benzodiazepine Addiction

After prolonged use, the body can build up a tolerance to their effects, and some may find that they need higher doses to achieve the same effect.

Over time, this can develop into physical dependence and addiction.

People may start taking benzodiazepines for a genuine medical reason only to find it difficult to cut down or stop once their prescription ends. Others begin misusing them for their calming or sedative effects.

It’s also important to note that not everyone who takes benzodiazepines becomes addicted.

Signs and Symptoms of Benzodiazepine Addiction

Recognising benzodiazepine addiction isn’t always straightforward. Because these medications are prescribed, it can be difficult to distinguish between appropriate use and problematic use.

If you’re worried about your own use or someone else’s, there are several signs that could suggest help is needed.

Physical Signs

  • Persistent drowsiness
  • Slurred speech
  • Poor coordination
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Memory problems
  • Reduced concentration

Behavioural Signs

  • Visiting multiple doctors to obtain additional prescriptions
  • Becoming secretive about medication use
  • Withdrawing from family and friends
  • Neglecting responsibilities at work, school or home
  • Continuing to use benzodiazepines despite negative consequences
  • Mixing benzodiazepines with alcohol or other substances

Psychological Symptoms

  • Increased anxiety between doses
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Panic attacks
  • Difficulty coping without medication

I have had serious addiction problems for the last 10 years that have ruined my life and the life of my loved ones. I am in my early 30’s and this was my third time in rehab but my first time staying at Cassiobury Court. The difference between Cassiobury and other facilities is incredible and you can’t compare with the level of support and love. The staff are kind, caring and know exactly what you are going through and what you need to do in order to get better. They have multiple different ways and techniques to support you and go above and beyond in every possible way to help you. Not only do they support you while you’re there but they also support you for the first year you leave with weekly catch up sessions. I have left Cassiobury with a huge network of people in recovery. Before I was lost and alone. I can’t thank Cassiobury enough for giving me another chance at life and I’ll be forever truly grateful ❤️❤️❤️

This was my first stay at a rehab facility and I entered for a 28 day stay. I came through the gates feeling like a hopeless lost child who had exhausted all other avenues, and now leave as a strong and hopeful individual with all the tools I need to carry on my sobriety journey on the outside. The day one, all the staff were caring and attentive, catering for all of your needs and explaining everything perfectly in a calm and friendly manner - you felt welcomed straight away. All of the days were filled with useful and varied sessions, with a structured routine, but still time to socialise and get to know your peers. One to one therapy sessions were invaluable, and I learnt a lot from my sessions which were conducted in a professional but caring manner, and have given me many techniques to take with me. Also the one to one key work sessions were brilliant, guiding you on your journey in a straightforward, constructive but also compassionate way. Also thanks to all of the amazing staff who ran all of our group sessions, I gained so much from these. The food was excellent, as well as the medical and housekeeping staff who ensured that you could focus your time and energy on your recovery at all times. For anyone seeking help with an addiction, I would 100% recommend Cassiobury Court.

My experience at CC has been truly life-changing. During my 2-week stay I managed to turn my life around with the help of the recovery programme CC has given me. All staff are very professional, supportive, friendly and approachable. I could turn to anyone at any time of the day if I needed help or simply anyone to talk to. The sessions are very informative and engaging. The feeling of community is unparallelled. I enjoyed a combination of 1-2-1 meetings/therapy sessions, group workshops, creative sessions and social activities. I was exposed to a variety of fellowships, was taught about multiple concepts and techniques to enable my recover. The facility itself, alongside with the quality of food and housekeeping is excellent. The atmosphere at CC made me feel safe, welcomed and understood. I would strongly recommend CC to any suffering addicts seeking a long-term receovery. When you book CC, you won't regret it!

As good as it gets for rehab. The staff are hard-working and caring. You get a nice blend of help and social (sober) interaction. They allow as much freedom as you can handle and mix a healthy blend of learning with the freedom to do as you please and not force any narratives.

Benzodiazepine Addiction Recovery

Stopping benzos use suddenly can be dangerous.

Unlike withdrawal from other substances, benzodiazepine withdrawal can sometimes cause serious complications like seizures and other psychological issues.

That’s why professionals will usually recommend gradually reducing your dose under medical supervision, rather than stopping suddenly.

Residential Benzodiazepine addiction rehab gives you the chance to focus entirely on your recovery without the distractions, pressures and triggers of everyday life.

Therapy gives you the opportunity to explore the factors that contributed to your substance use. By understanding those causes, you can start developing healthier ways to cope without relying on medication.

Can You Recover On Your Own?

Some people can reduce or stop their benzo use altogether with support from their GP or local healthcare services, but professional treatment offers far more than just a safe detox. It addresses the underlying reasons behind your addiction, helping you to develop healthier solutions to the challenges and triggers that lead to it.

Asking for help isn’t a sign of failure. For many people, it’s the safest and most effective route to lasting recovery.

Residential Benzodiazepine Addiction Rehab at Cassiobury Court

Choosing residential treatment gives you the time and space to focus fully on your recovery in a safe, supportive environment.

Residential rehab might be a good idea if:

  • Previous attempts to stop have been unsuccessful
  • You’re experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms
  • You’re using codeine alongside alcohol or other drugs
  • You have underlying mental health concerns
  • Your home environment makes recovery more difficult
  • You’d benefit from additional structure and ongoing support

At Cassiobury Court, every treatment programme is tailored to the individual. We take the time to understand your circumstances, challenges and recovery goals before creating a personalised treatment plan for you.

Throughout your stay, you’ll be supported by an experienced and compassionate team who understand the complexities of benzodiazepine addiction. Our goal isn’t simply to help you stop taking benzos safely. We’re here to give you the tools, confidence and ongoing support you need to maintain your recovery long after treatment ends.

Admission

Your recovery journey begins from the moment you contact us. Our admissions team will take the time to understand your history, challenges, and goals, providing clear guidance throughout the process and helping to create a tailored treatment plan that addresses your individual needs.

Treatment

We combine expert clinical care with evidence-based psychological therapies to support every stage of your recovery. Our doctors, therapists, psychologists, and nursing team work together to deliver a personalised programme of treatment, education, and therapeutic activities tailored to your needs.

Aftercare

Completing rehab is a major achievement, but maintaining recovery requires ongoing support. Our aftercare programme gives you access to therapy groups, recovery resources, relapse prevention strategies, and practical guidance, helping you navigate life after treatment with confidence.
