Pregabalin and Gabapentin Addiction Treatment

Pregabalin and gabapentin are prescription medications part of the Gabapentinoid group of drugs. Used primarily to treat nerve pain, epilepsy and anxiety, they work by binding to the central nervous system and calming down your nerve signals.

Like most prescription drugs, pregabalin, gabapentin, and other Gabapentinoids are safe for use when taken in controlled doses. However, misuse such as:

  • Taking without medical guidance
  • Taking higher doses than prescribed
  • Combining them with alcohol or other drugs

can lead to serious health complications and addiction.

Understanding Gabapentinoid Addiction

Gabapentinoid drugs act by mimicking the GABA neurotransmitter in your body to reduce pain caused by overactive nerves. Drugs including pregabalin (also known as Lyrica) and gabapentin are classified as controlled substances due to their stronger euphoric effects.

As with other drugs, over-prescribing or use over extended periods can cause the body to develop a tolerance for their effects, and you may find that you need higher dosages to achieve the same results. Following extended use, the comedown experienced from withdrawal can also sometimes be too much, and you may feel like another dosage is needed to bring you back to how you feel regularly.

This can eventually lead to dependence and addiction.

Signs and Symptoms of Gabapentinoid Addiction

Spotting the signs of any kind of Gabapentinoid abuse can be complicated, however, there are usually warnings that you, or someone you know, may be developing an issue.

These are typically unwanted physical and psychological symptoms including:

  • Increased cravings where you may constantly think about the drug and feel compelled to use it regularly.
  • Finding it difficult to control or limit use, despite the negative consequences.
  • Addiction can lead to neglecting important responsibilities where you may prioritise obtaining and using the drug over other things.
  • Addiction can cause you to withdraw from social activities and relationships and spend a significant amount of time alone or in the company of others who also abuse drugs.

This was my first stay at a rehab facility and I entered for a 28 day stay. I came through the gates feeling like a hopeless lost child who had exhausted all other avenues, and now leave as a strong and hopeful individual with all the tools I need to carry on my sobriety journey on the outside. The day one, all the staff were caring and attentive, catering for all of your needs and explaining everything perfectly in a calm and friendly manner - you felt welcomed straight away. All of the days were filled with useful and varied sessions, with a structured routine, but still time to socialise and get to know your peers. One to one therapy sessions were invaluable, and I learnt a lot from my sessions which were conducted in a professional but caring manner, and have given me many techniques to take with me. Also the one to one key work sessions were brilliant, guiding you on your journey in a straightforward, constructive but also compassionate way. Also thanks to all of the amazing staff who ran all of our group sessions, I gained so much from these. The food was excellent, as well as the medical and housekeeping staff who ensured that you could focus your time and energy on your recovery at all times. For anyone seeking help with an addiction, I would 100% recommend Cassiobury Court.

I’ve benefitted hugely from my treatment at Cassiobury Court. In fact I’ve had the best month of the last 2 years. The staff here are the best of the best and I will always recommend this amazing place to anyone I know who requires treatment for any known addiction. Rafa the Manager, Martin, Steve, Seth, Gerard, Oli, Jane, Alison, Rebecca, Paul & George are superb as well as Alan, Paula, Helen and Steve with the unrivalled catering. Cassiobury Court is also excellent value for money compared to other far more expensive but inferior Treatment Clinics. I’m very much looking forward to returning to Chair group meetings in the future. Many thanks to everyone. You’ll always remain affectionately in my heart. Rob.

I’ve very recently attended the Cassiobury Court rehab facility and highly recommend the services provided. Set in a quiet location with enclosed courtyard the bedrooms, tutorial rooms and dining rooms are well maintained, impeccably clean and mostly modern internally The biggest plus is the wealth of experience and quality of counsellors, tutors and many of the supporting staff who themselves are recovering alcoholics/ addicts. Conducted in a structured but relaxed atmosphere the breadth and depth of tuition and counselling is such that it stimulates the open, positive participation of Clients whilst always being supportive of both the group and the individual. This is greatly enhanced with the attendance of local ‘live’ external CA meetings, zoom meetings and visiting ‘shares’ from recovering addicts. With superb catering and even a washing and cleaning service included It’s an experience that bettered my expectations and was great fun also.

I needed to be separated from alcohol and initially booked in for a two week alcohol detox. A couple of days in however i knew i was in a good 12 step based rehab. I decided then another 2 weeks was necessary to get a good solid start for my recovery journey. I have experience of a 12 step program, it had worked for me for some years prior. Cassiobury Ct had a good, varied program. I learnt so much more about myself and addiction. The staff were all compassionate and knowledgeable. Many had been where i was. I felt safe in CC. I was fortunate to be surrounded by very supportive peers, we cried together and we laughed together. I walked in feeling such a failure , since leaving i have held my head high. Thank you for the love CC when I struggled to love myself. Cathy R

Where do I even start… This has been my second time in there as a year ago when I was there, I didn’t take the program seriously enough and I just wanted to get clean from drugs but not follow the 12 step program. However after having a few months sobriety, then relapsing as I didn’t do what was suggest to me! I ended up going back for 28 days. Let me tell you, that this experience was a one in a lifetime and I took everything on board, attended all sessions and did exactly what I was told! Every single member of staff at cassiobury go above and beyond for their clients. They put time and effort into all of us and someone is always there for you to talk to day or night. There is a huge range of sessions which you can attend and this give you the knowledge of your addiction. You also have counselling sessions once a week which helps massively🙏🏼 Cassiobury court feels like your home with your family. Leaving today was so tough as I left so many amazing people behind there. However this is the new start of my journey, I have the right tools behind me this time and I would never of been able to do it without cassiobury. Also big up the chiefs there! The food is AMAZING!!!!! I put on over a stone in 4 weeks…I think that says it all! Thank you cassiobury for giving me a new and improved way of living.

My experience at CC has been truly life-changing. During my 4-week stay I managed to turn my life around with the help of the recovery programme CC has given me. All staff are very professional, supportive, friendly and approachable. I could turn to anyone at any time of the day if I needed help or simply anyone to talk to. The sessions are very informative and engaging. The feeling of community is unparallelled. I enjoyed a combination of 1-2-1 meetings/therapy sessions, group workshops, creative sessions and social activities. taught about multiple concepts and techniques to enable my recover. The facility itself, alongside with the quality of food and housekeeping is excellent. The atmosphere at CC made me feel safe, welcomed and understood. I would strongly recommend CC to any sufferingaddicts seeking a long-term recovery. My only suggestion was to arrange activities between group meetings and some exercise equipment. The table tennis table and the TV in the main group meeting room needs fixing for normal TV programmes. Apart fruthe issues above I would recommend CC for rehabilitation

Gabapentinoid Addiction Recovery

Recovery from gabapentinoid abuse can be difficult, but it’s entirely possible to eliminate any cravings and dependencies.

For many who started taking gabapentinoids for medical reasons, it’s not recommended to abruptly stop taking all medications, as it may risk a dangerous return of your underlying conditions.

Stopping suddenly can also trigger severe withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, and nausea. In some extreme cases, if you were taking gabapentin for help with epilepsy, sudden withdrawal can trigger an increase in seizures.

Can You Recover on Your Own?

Recovery from gabapentinoid addiction is possible, but it can be extremely difficult. If you’re considering recovery independently from a rehabilitation centre, we’d still recommend seeking support from your family or local healthcare services.

Seeking help for your addiction doesn’t have to be a sign of weakness. Instead, it’s an important stage in your recovery.

Residential Gabapentinoid Rehab at Cassiobury Court

Recovery at Cassiobury Court provides you with a safe and structured environment to work through your addictions. It can address the underlying reasons behind your actions and help you develop healthier habits.

We’d recommend seeking residential rehabilitation if:

  • Previous attempts to stop have been unsuccessful
  • You’re experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms
  • You’re using gabapentinoids alongside alcohol or other drugs
  • You have underlying mental health concerns
  • Your home environment makes recovery more difficult
  • You’d benefit from additional structure and ongoing support

Treatment is designed to work for you and your situation. Our team of support workers will be by your side every step of the way to help you on your way to long-term recovery.

Detox

Before therapy and rehabilitation can begin, many clients require a period of detoxification. At Cassiobury Court, our supervised detox programme helps you safely transition away from substance use, giving your body and mind the opportunity to stabilise before starting further treatment.

Treatment

Following detox, you’ll begin the therapeutic phase of your recovery, working alongside our experienced clinicians to explore the underlying causes of addiction. Through a combination of CBT, counselling, workshops, and holistic therapies, we’ll help you develop healthier habits and a stronger foundation for the future.

Aftercare

Recovery continues even after rehab, which is why we help you create a 12-month aftercare plan to support your sobriety and prevent a relapse. This will include ongoing support from our team, as well as introductions to local therapy groups and home resources.
