Trauma-Informed Care

Nothing in your life occurs in a vacuum. Past experiences can affect your wellbeing, behaviour, and relationships and be a factor in substance abuse. Trauma can inform addiction in some people, and a more considerate approach is needed to help.

Trauma-informed care is one of the approaches that we at Cassiobury Court can adopt as part of our personalised residential treatment programme. This approach is not the same as specialist trauma-processing therapy that you may have heard about. Instead, this type of care focuses on safety, trust, choice and understanding you as a whole person, rather than reducing you to a diagnosis or addiction.

What Is Trauma-Informed Care?

Trauma-informed care is an approach to healthcare that understands that trauma and adversity are common experiences. According to PTSD UK, between 50 and 70% of people will experience trauma at some point in their life.

This approach understands that these experiences, even if they happened a long time ago, can affect current emotions, behaviours and relationships. With this knowledge, this type of care seeks to prioritise safe and trusting therapeutic relationships, whilst encouraging collaboration and informed choice.

The patient or client is at the centre of trauma-informed care. They are more than a diagnosis, and this approach looks to ensure that further harm or re-traumatisation does not occur.

What Is the Link Between Trauma and Addiction?

Trauma and addiction are commonly linked, but that doesn’t mean the former will always lead to the latter.

Everyone may experience trauma, but people are different, and while some may find healthier ways to overcome the damage that trauma does, many people seek to cope and get by. In this case, people may use alcohol or drugs to cope with distressing memories, emotions, anxiety, sleep problems or other consequences that trauma can bring up.

Research has found that there is a strong link between all types of trauma and addictive behaviour, especially when it comes to those who have been in combat. Substances that are used as coping mechanisms can eventually compound problems, worsening trauma symptoms.

Compassionately approaching trauma and addiction treatment means understanding these patterns without blame or judgement, aware that experiencing painful things can be a common occurrence for those suffering from substance abuse.

The Principles of Trauma-Informed Addiction Treatment

Trauma therapy for addiction is built on an ethos that is concerned with recognising trauma and responding appropriately with a focus on avoiding re-traumatisation. It is built around several principles, including:

  • Ensuring physical and emotional safety
  • Building trust and transparency
  • Encouraging choice and collaboration
  • Respect and dignity
  • Empowerment

As good as it gets for rehab. The staff are hard-working and caring. You get a nice blend of help and social (sober) interaction. They allow as much freedom as you can handle and mix a healthy blend of learning with the freedom to do as you please and not force any narratives.

I recently spent time at Cassiobury Court and I genuinely can’t speak highly enough of the experience. The support staff were exceptional. The therapists were insightful, grounded, and actually listened. Even the behind-the-scenes team, the cleaners and the chefs, played a huge part in making the environment feel safe and cared for. Special mention to Alan in the kitchen. What stood out most was how comprehensive the programme is. It doesn’t just scratch the surface of addiction, it goes deeper, looking at the patterns, the behaviours, and the root causes, all delivered with real care and respect. If someone is serious about getting support, this is a place that truly delivers. Like everything in life, you get out what you put in. Keep up the amazing work- you’re saving lives.

I needed to be separated from alcohol and initially booked in for a two week alcohol detox. A couple of days in however i knew i was in a good 12 step based rehab. I decided then another 2 weeks was necessary to get a good solid start for my recovery journey. I have experience of a 12 step program, it had worked for me for some years prior. Cassiobury Ct had a good, varied program. I learnt so much more about myself and addiction. The staff were all compassionate and knowledgeable. Many had been where i was. I felt safe in CC. I was fortunate to be surrounded by very supportive peers, we cried together and we laughed together. I walked in feeling such a failure , since leaving i have held my head high. Thank you for the love CC when I struggled to love myself. Cathy R

It’s a pleasure to have been a client at Cassiobury Court. From the moment I arrived I felt like a welcome part of the family, it’s non judgmental and compassionate approach to recovery has differed from any center which I have previously attended. The structure allowed me to develop at my own pace and to work through my recovery journey, which started with me at an all time low. When I entered I was a shell of a person, after a toxic relationship. My substance misuse and eating disorder was out of control and my health, mental and physical, was deteriorating rapidly. The staff, each with there own expertise and experience guided me compassionately and from a genuine place of kindness and warmth. The facilities, all departments from housekeeping, kitchen to admin and support staff, have made a genuine difference to the person I am leaving as. Strong, rebuilt and confident. Ready to step into a life of sobriety and positivity. I have made life long friends and made life long changes thanks to Cassiobury. I can genuinely recommend Cassiobury, to anyone who has found themselves in the depths of there addiction, they will help you find the path out, however unmanageable life may seem. All my love to the team there and to the clients past, present and future Amy x

I entered through the gates of Cassiobury court a very frightened and ill women. This was my first time in treatment and from the start I was made to feel welcome and loved by all the staff. Once going through my detox , I finally started joining the group workshops and meeting my peers. This place is amazing , every day you have a routine starting with breakfast and then onto group lessons and ex clients coming in to share their journey with you , which is the best thing ever as they have walked the same steps as you and you can really relate to them and see the hope that their is life after addiction . You are encouraged to work hard but also have some freedom to rest if needed. I found my mind opening to finally understand the illness I have been suffering from and to see its not only ME on my own , there are other people like me out there. Nearly every staff member is in recovery , which is so important as they understand what you are going through and teach you the tools to be able to maintain this once you leave rehab . You also have the opportunity to go to AA and CA meetings in Watford which is great as you go as a group and then gives you the confidence to continue once you leave . My keyworker was Rebecca and can not thank her enough , she really is AMAZING and has helped me so much . She is very honest and open and shares her journey with you which gives you the encouragement to feel safe and be able to open up and share yours with her xx Every member of staff in this place is full of so much knowledge and kindness . You always have someone to talk to if you need a chat or any help . The food is also fantastic ,Alan and Paula do an amazing job . There is menu every day and if you don't like what is on offer you can always ask them to make you something else. Sam and her team do a brilliant job of keeping your rooms clean /maintenance of the building . And again if there is anything you are not happy with or need you can always go to Sam and she will do her best to help you I have been very lucky to have meet some fantastic and supportive peers at my time in CC. Rebecca , Ayo , Martin , Gerard , Seth , Jane , Alison , Shipra , Laura , Sam , Raffa , Patricia and every member of staff I thank you from the bottom of my heart Kel xxxx

Safety and Trust in Trauma-Informed Care

Feeling safe and having trust is critical to trauma therapy for addiction. The care that people receive must be consistent, built on clear communication that demonstrates their boundaries are being respected.

When people feel more assured, trust builds, and they become more open to help. Confidentiality must be maintained too so that clients know whatever they share does not go beyond their sessions.

With safety and trust, collaborative decisions can be made, showing clients that they are leading the way, rather than being told what to do.

Choice and Personalised Treatment

At Cassiobury Court, we place people at the core of our treatment, tailoring recovery programmes to individual needs, circumstances and recovery goals. We aim to make sure that people at Cassiobury Court understand their treatment options and participate in decisions when it is right.

Trauma-Informed Care During Detox and Early Recovery

Withdrawal and early recovery can be hard to get through because you remove the mechanism you were using to cope with negative emotions, increasing anxiety or distress, and you have yet to learn new healthy strategies.

During this time, predictable and compassionate support is essential, and the focus should be on safe withdrawal, rather than jumping into talking about deeper, traumatic experiences.

At Cassiobury Court, we provide medically assisted detox, aiming to make withdrawal as comfortable to get through as possible.

Therapies Used Alongside Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed care will shape how treatment is delivered to you, rather than entailing specific sessions necessarily. Instead, you will likely participate in a range of particular psychological therapies that address individual treatment goals.

Therapies you could take part in as part of a trauma-informed addiction treatment approach include:

Trauma-Informed Care and Relapse Prevention

Trauma-informed care can continue to help through your recovery journey. By learning to identify situations, memories, and emotions associated with distress and recognising how substance abuse was a coping device, you can begin to work on safer strategies.

Using methods such as mindfulness and grounding techniques can lead to better emotional regulation, helping you deal better when you encounter potential triggers. You can work on planned responses for when confronted with these difficult emotions.

You can also continue to build a support network after rehab, having people to lean on in tough moments and get continued appropriate psychological support, if you think it is necessary.

There is no silver bullet for relapse prevention, but keeping what you’ve learned from trauma-informed care may help long-term.
