Codeine Addiction Treatment

One of the most prescribed pain-relieving medications in the UK, Codeine belongs to a group of medicines known as opioids and is commonly used to treat mild illnesses and injuries. When taken as advised and for short periods, codeine can be an effective way to manage pain.

Codeine works by reacting with your liver and converting into morphine. This active morphine then combines with your receptors and central nervous system, blocking certain signals and relieving pain.

The side effects of Codeine can vary from person to person, and while most won’t experience anything major, taking more than the recommended amount can result in several serious issues. Codeine has also been seen to be a gateway drug to more extreme addictions including Heroin.

Understanding Codeine Addiction

As a member of the Opioid family, and like many other strong painkillers, Codeine provides a euphoric high accompanied by feelings of comfort and relaxation.

However, because it affects the brain’s reward system as well as reducing pain, it also carries a risk of dependence and addiction, particularly when taken for longer than recommended or in higher doses.

Although many codeine medications are legally prescribed or available from pharmacies, improper use can significantly increase the risk of addiction and other health complications. Following prolonged use, your brain becomes used to the extra dopamine that codeine produces and your body develops a resistance. That means you’ll need higher doses to achieve the same effect.

Over time, this can develop into physical dependence and addiction.

Signs and Symptoms of Codeine Addiction

Recognising the signs of codeine addiction isn’t always easy. Due to the nature of it being a prescription drug, it can be tricky to identify the difference between prescribed use and overuse.

If you’re worried about your own use or someone else’s, there are several signs that suggest help could be needed. These include:

  • Low blood pressure
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Feeling fatigued
  • Nonsensical and slurred speech
  • Low attention span
  • Difficulty with co-ordination

My experience at CC has been truly life-changing. During my 4-week stay I managed to turn my life around with the help of the recovery programme CC has given me. All staff are very professional, supportive, friendly and approachable. I could turn to anyone at any time of the day if I needed help or simply anyone to talk to. The sessions are very informative and engaging. The feeling of community is unparallelled. I enjoyed a combination of 1-2-1 meetings/therapy sessions, group workshops, creative sessions and social activities. taught about multiple concepts and techniques to enable my recover. The facility itself, alongside with the quality of food and housekeeping is excellent. The atmosphere at CC made me feel safe, welcomed and understood. I would strongly recommend CC to any sufferingaddicts seeking a long-term recovery. My only suggestion was to arrange activities between group meetings and some exercise equipment. The table tennis table and the TV in the main group meeting room needs fixing for normal TV programmes. Apart fruthe issues above I would recommend CC for rehabilitation

This is a treatment centre of the highest calibre. The staff are all highly professional, knowledgeable, approachable and caring. They are a hope-filled resource for any addiction advice and life advice. The wholistic approach of the treatment itself was highly beneficial. As a brief overview, it encompassed: Group sessions, which was a great opportunity to learn about addiction, effective methods of controlling thoughts, emotions and how to incorporate these new skills into daily life and recovery. Mindfulness sessions that taught us the basics of meditation, breathing techniques and emotional regulation. One-to-one sessions with my key worker gave me the guidance needed to incorporate the learned material into an easy to follow recovery plan. My key worker also identified various areas of additional support which will further my recovery both during my stay at Cassiobury Court and in my general daily life. I found the private sessions with the remarkable therapists and psychologist extremely valuable for realigning my values in life so as to seek solace in my pursuits as well as becoming more emotionally centred. As a result I now see the joys in life and not the negatives. On a final note, I commend their high endeavours to offer clean, safe and comfortable living quarters with delicious hot food. They even took care of my laundry for me so that I was able to focus on my health and recovery without distraction. If you are seeking recovery by means of treatment and NOT punishment then Cassiobury Court is quite literally a LIFE SAVER.

Codeine Addiction Recovery

Recovering from codeine addiction involves much more than simply stopping medication. Effective treatment focuses on managing withdrawal safely while helping you understand the underlying reasons behind your substance use.

Because codeine is an opioid, stopping suddenly can lead to uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms including:

  • Chills
  • Cramps
  • Dehydration
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mood swings

Although withdrawal is not usually life-threatening, symptoms can be distressing and often increase the risk of relapse if attempted without support.

While detoxing addresses your physical dependence on codeine, therapy is also essential to explore the emotional, psychological and behavioural factors contributing to your addiction. These may include chronic pain, stress, trauma, anxiety, depression or other underlying challenges.

Can You Recover On Your Own?

It is possible to reduce or stop your codeine use on your own or with support from their GP or local healthcare services, but professional rehabilitation provides far more than just a safe detox. It can address the underlying reasons behind your addiction and help you develop healthier ways to overcome your urges.

It OK to ask for help. For many, it can be safest and most effective route to a lasting recovery.
